Day 4: Those who do not yet know Jesus
On the fourth day of the Divine Mercy Novena, the Lord broadens the circle of intercession beyond the visible Church to include those who do not believe in God and those who do not yet know Jesus. The novena's missionary heart appears today: the petitioner stands as a representative of the Church praying for the conversion of the world.
The Lord's words to Saint Faustina
"Today bring to Me those who do not believe in God and those who do not yet know Me. I was thinking also of them during My bitter Passion, and their future zeal comforted My Heart. Immerse them in the ocean of My mercy." (Diary 1216)
The Lord names two distinct groups: those who do not believe in God (the contemporary atheist, the agnostic, the hard secular) and those who do not yet know Jesus (those whose religious tradition has not yet given them the encounter with the Person of Christ). Both groups are objects of the Lord's love, and both are entrusted to our intercession on Day 4.
Today's prayer (from Diary 1217)
Most Compassionate Jesus, You are the Light of the whole world. Receive into the abode of Your Most Compassionate Heart the souls of those who do not believe in God and of those who as yet do not know You. Let the rays of Your grace enlighten them that they, too, together with us, may extol Your wonderful mercy; and do not let them escape from the abode which is Your Most Compassionate Heart.
Eternal Father, turn Your merciful gaze upon the souls of those who do not believe in You, and of those who as yet do not know Your Son, Jesus, but who are enclosed in the Most Compassionate Heart of Jesus. Draw them to the light of the Gospel. These souls do not know what great happiness it is to love You. Grant that they, too, may extol the generosity of Your mercy for endless ages. Amen.
The Chaplet of Divine Mercy
Pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. Offer it today for the conversion of the world: for the missionaries serving in lands without Christ, for atheists and agnostics in your own family or city, for those of other faiths who have not yet encountered the Person of Jesus, for those who have actively rejected God and remain in a state of spiritual darkness.
Reflection
The Catholic doctrine of evangelization holds that every person without exception is called to know Jesus Christ as Savior. "There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved" (Acts 4:12). This is not a triumphalist claim against other religions; it is a confession of who Christ is, and a recognition that the work of His mercy includes every person who has ever lived.
Catholic theology distinguishes between invincible ignorance (one who, through no fault of his own, does not know Christ) and culpable rejection (one who has been presented with Christ and has refused Him). For both groups, our prayer is the same: that the Lord's mercy would draw them, through means we may not see, into the light of the Gospel. The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches: "Those who, through no fault of their own, do not know the Gospel of Christ or his Church, but who nevertheless seek God with a sincere heart, and, moved by grace, try in their actions to do his will as they know it through the dictates of their conscience, those too may achieve eternal salvation" (CCC 847).
If you have particular people on your heart on Day 4 (a child who has fallen away from the faith, a colleague who is hostile to the Church, a friend whose grief has hardened him against God, a family member of another religion who has not encountered Christ as Savior), name them today. Bring this person, with all the unbelievers and those who do not yet know Jesus, into the Compassionate Heart of the Lord.
Closing prayers
Conclude with the Our Father, the Hail Mary, and the Glory Be.
Jesus, I trust in You.
