Day 2: The choir of the Cherubim

The second day of the Saint Michael Novena petitions through the choir of the Cherubim and asks for the grace of true knowledge of God.

The Cherubim

The Cherubim are the second choir of angels. They first appear in Scripture at the gates of Eden, guarding the way to the Tree of Life with a flaming sword (Genesis 3:24). In the Temple of Solomon, two great Cherubim overshadowed the Ark of the Covenant. In the visions of Ezekiel they bear the throne of God.

The Cherubim are characterized in Catholic angelology by the fullness of true knowledge of God. Where the Seraphim burn with divine love, the Cherubim shine with divine knowing.

The grace of Day 2

Today we ask through the intercession of Saint Michael and the Cherubim for the grace of true knowledge of God: that our intellects may be purified of error, that we may know God truly through the Catholic faith, and that this knowledge may lead us to love.

Prayer

Saint Michael the Archangel, by your intercession and that of the choir of the Cherubim, ask the Lord to grant us true knowledge of Him. Free our minds from the errors of the age. Teach us to see what is real, to know what is true, and to love what we know.

O Lord God, You who are Truth itself, illumine our minds with the light of right knowledge. Amen.
