Catholic prayers for protection
The Catholic tradition has developed a body of short prayers specifically for spiritual protection, defense against evil, and the sanctification of the household. The principal short prayers are featured below.
For the longer nine-day Catholic prayer of protection, see the Catholic novenas for protection (Saint Michael the Archangel, Saint Joseph, Saint Christopher).
The Sign of the Cross
The Catholic Sign of the Cross is the Catholic Church's most fundamental prayer of protection. Made slowly, with the deliberate invocation of the Holy Trinity ("In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit"), the Sign of the Cross consecrates the body and the day to the protection of God. Catholic tradition has prayed it at every threshold: entering and leaving the home, beginning and ending every prayer, before sleep, on rising, before meals, at the start of every journey.
The Saint Michael Prayer (Pope Leo XIII)
Composed by Pope Leo XIII in 1886 after a reported vision of the spiritual conflict facing the Catholic Church in the modern age, the Saint Michael Prayer is the principal short Catholic prayer for defense against evil:
Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan, and all the evil spirits, who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.
Pope Leo XIII originally directed that the prayer be recited after every Low Mass throughout the universal Catholic Church. The practice fell into disuse after the Second Vatican Council but has been restored in many Catholic parishes since the late twentieth century. The prayer may be prayed privately by any Catholic at any time.
The Anima Christi (closing lines)
The medieval Catholic prayer Anima Christi contains an explicit petition for protection:
From the malignant enemy defend me. In the hour of my death call me. And bid me come unto Thee, that with thy saints I may praise thee, forever and ever. Amen.
Catholic spiritual writers have recommended the Anima Christi as the prayer after Holy Communion specifically for the protection of the Catholic soul throughout the day, joining the morning sacramental reception of Christ to the closing petition for defense against the spiritual enemy.
The Hail Mary as the prayer of protection
The Hail Mary contains a petition for protection in its closing line: "Pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death." Catholic tradition has prayed the Hail Mary in every moment of spiritual need, and the daily Holy Rosary (which consists in essence of 53 Hail Marys distributed across five decades) is the principal Catholic prayer of sustained spiritual defense throughout the centuries.
Catholic sacramentals of protection
The Catholic Church teaches that physical objects blessed by an ordained priest become sacramentals: instruments of God's protective grace through the prayer of the Catholic Church (CCC 1667-1670). The principal Catholic sacramentals of protection are:
- Blessed holy water, sprinkled in the home, especially at the front door, in the bedrooms, and in seasons of spiritual struggle.
- The Crucifix, displayed prominently in every room of the Catholic home.
- The Saint Benedict medal, worn on the person or placed at the entrances of the home. The medal includes the Catholic prayer of exorcism in abbreviated form on its reverse side.
- The brown scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, worn around the neck under the clothing. Catholic tradition attributes to its faithful wearing the explicit Marian promise of protection from final impenitence at the hour of death.
- The Miraculous Medal of Saint Catherine Laboure (1830), bearing the inscription "O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee."
These sacramentals are not magic. They are the instruments through which the prayer of the Catholic Church is communicated to the Catholic faithful in physical form.
Frequently asked questions
Which is the most powerful Catholic prayer for protection?
The Sign of the Cross, made deliberately and with conscious invocation of the Holy Trinity, is the Catholic Church's most fundamental prayer of spiritual protection. The Saint Michael Prayer of Pope Leo XIII (1886) is the principal short Catholic prayer addressed specifically to the Archangel Michael for defense against evil. The Holy Rosary is the great Catholic prayer of sustained spiritual defense.
Is the Saint Michael Prayer of Leo XIII still approved for use?
Yes. The prayer was never formally suppressed, and Pope Saint John Paul II explicitly recommended its revival in a 1994 Regina Caeli address. Many Catholic parishes have restored it after Mass in recent decades, and it may be prayed privately by any Catholic at any time.
Can Catholic short prayers really protect from evil?
The Catholic Church teaches that the prayer of faith, joined to the use of Catholic sacramentals (the Sign of the Cross, blessed holy water, the Crucifix, the Saint Benedict medal, the brown scapular), is a real means of spiritual defense (CCC 1667-1670). The protection is the work of God, communicated through the faith of the praying Catholic, not a magical effect of the words themselves.
What should I do if I suspect demonic activity in my home?
Bring the matter to the Catholic priest. The Catholic Church reserves formal exorcism to the ordained priesthood with the explicit permission of the local bishop, and the discernment of genuine demonic activity is reserved to the same. In the meantime, the Catholic faithful are urged to use the ordinary sacramentals (blessed holy water sprinkled in the home, the Crucifix in every room, the daily family Rosary), to receive the Sacrament of Penance, and to attend Sunday Mass.
