The Our Lady of Mount Carmel Novena

Day 9: Hope of the Dying

The ninth and final day addresses Mary as Hope of the Dying, the Marian title proper to the Brown Scapular promise.

Mary, Hope of the Dying

The promise of the Brown Scapular concerns the moment of death: those who die clothed in the scapular, having lived faithful Catholic lives, are promised Marian assistance at that hour. The Carmelite tradition invokes Mary as Spes Morientium (Hope of the Dying) in every prayer for a holy death.

Prayer

Mary, Hope of the Dying, be present to me at the hour of my death. Stand by me. Let me hold the scapular in my hands and your name on my lips. Receive me into your protection, and lead me to the company of your Son. Amen.

Conclude with one Our Father, one Hail Mary, and one Glory Be. The novena is now complete.
