Day 6: The choir of the Powers

The sixth day of the Saint Michael Novena petitions through the choir of the Powers and asks for the grace of resistance to spiritual evil.

The Powers

The Powers (Greek exousiai) are the sixth choir of angels in Saint Paul's enumeration (Colossians 1:16). The patristic tradition identifies them as the angels particularly engaged in spiritual warfare against the fallen powers. They confront the demonic forces directly and prevent the disordering of God's creation by spiritual malice.

The Powers are characterized in Catholic angelology by their resistance to evil and their guarding of the boundary between God's order and the chaos of demonic opposition.

The grace of Day 6

Today we ask through the intercession of Saint Michael and the Powers for the grace of resistance to spiritual evil: that we may discern the snares of the devil, refuse the temptations that come our way, and stand firm in the Catholic faith against every diabolical assault.

Prayer

Saint Michael the Archangel, by your intercession and that of the choir of the Powers, defend us from the snares of the devil. May we resist temptation as you resisted the dragon. May we cling to the Catholic faith when the world, the flesh, and the enemy of souls would tear us from it.

O Lord God, deliver us from evil and lead us not into temptation. Amen.
