The Three Hail Marys Novena
The Three Hail Marys Novena is a nine-day Catholic prayer built on the medieval Catholic devotion of praying three Hail Marys each day in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary's principal privileges. The novena is brief (approximately five minutes per day) and is among the most accessible Marian devotions for daily Catholic life.
Origin and historical development
The Three Hail Marys devotion is attested from the late medieval period and was popularized by Saint Anthony of Padua, Saint Mechtilde of Hackeborn, and Saint Alphonsus Liguori. The Catholic tradition has consistently invoked it for the grace of preserving purity and the protection of the Marian privileges in the soul of the petitioner.
The novena form (the daily Three Hail Marys extended across nine days) was systematized in the post-Tridentine devotional tradition and has been preserved in Catholic parish life ever since.
Structure of the novena
Each day, the petitioner prays three Hail Marys accompanied by:
- The first Hail Mary: in honor of Mary's Divine Maternity (her dignity as Mother of God), asking for the grace of faith.
- The second Hail Mary: in honor of Mary's Perpetual Virginity, asking for the grace of purity in one's state in life.
- The third Hail Mary: in honor of Mary's Immaculate Conception, asking for the grace of perseverance in the friendship of God.
Each day's meditation focuses on one Marian theme drawn from the four Marian dogmas.
When the novena is prayed
The Three Hail Marys Novena may be prayed at any time of year. Catholic tradition recommends it particularly:
- In preparation for a sacramental confession
- Before a major decision or vocation discernment
- At the start of a Marian month (May or October)
- In any situation of moral temptation or spiritual difficulty
Theological foundation
The novena rests on the four Marian dogmas: Mary as Mother of God, perpetually virginal, immaculately conceived, and assumed bodily into heaven. Each dogma is the theological reality that the corresponding Hail Mary praises.
Pairing with other prayers
The Three Hail Marys Novena pairs naturally with daily Mass attendance, the Angelus, the Memorare, and the Holy Rosary. It is one of the simplest Catholic Marian devotions to add to daily prayer.
Sources
The principal source is the medieval Catholic devotional tradition, preserved in the Raccolta indulgenced-prayer collection and in standard Catholic devotional manuals. Saint Alphonsus Liguori treats the devotion in The Glories of Mary (1750).
