The Saint Christopher Novena

The Saint Christopher Novena is a nine-day Catholic prayer through the intercession of Saint Christopher, the legendary third-century martyr whose Greek name means "Christ-bearer" (Christophoros). The novena is prayed for safe travel, for the protection of those undertaking journeys, and for spiritual perseverance under the burden of one's life duties.

Origin and historical development

The legend of Saint Christopher carrying the Christ Child across a river became one of the most loved Catholic devotional images of the medieval period. From this iconography flowed the patronage of travelers, ferrymen, and (in the modern era) motorists.

The novena form, prayed in preparation for the feast on July 25, traditionally invokes Saint Christopher under the various Catholic titles given to him: Christ-bearer, Patron of Travelers, Protector against Storms, Patron of Athletes, Comforter in Burdens.

Structure of the novena

Each day attends to one aspect of Saint Christopher's witness: the bearing of Christ, conversion from worldly ambition, perseverance under burden, the protection of strangers, the safety of travel, peace in danger, the imitation of charity in service, witness against fear, and final perseverance.

When the novena is prayed

The traditional dates of the novena are July 16 through July 24, ending on the eve of the feast on July 25. The novena may also be prayed at any time of year before a journey, as preparation for a difficult task, or in any moment of being overwhelmed.

Theological foundation

Saint Christopher's iconography is a Catholic theological catechesis in image: the strong carrying the weak, the human nature of the saint bearing the divine nature of Christ, the river crossing as the passage of every Catholic life from this world to the next. Pairing with other prayers

The novena pairs naturally with the Holy Rosary, the Sign of the Cross traced before each journey, and the foundational Catholic prayers. The Catholic Saint Christopher medal is the principal sacramental associated with the devotion.

Sources

The principal early source is Jacobus de Voragine, Legenda Aurea (c. 1260). For the modern Catholic veneration of Saint Christopher, see the Roman Martyrology and the standard Catholic devotional manuals.
